A transsexual burglar has been spared jail by a judge who took pity on her.

Thea Cox - born Timothy - broke into a string of student digs stealing food and women's clothes.

Cox, 54, who had a sex change in 1983, was serving a suspended sentence for possession of an offensive weapon at the time of the six raids in Exeter and faced a prison term.
